Apparently I'm cool enough where I'm starting to get invited to a lot of really cool events, where I get to try lots of yummy things and go home with some free products to try. I was recently invited to the got milk? blogging event in Downtown San Diego, where I got to sample lots of delicious Latte drinks, eat desserts that I shouldn't have been able to touch, had a Palm Reading, a Tarot Card Reading, and went home with a nice got milk? t-shirt and coffee mug to commemorate the event. Lets just say it was nice.
Heather Perry, whom is a two-time United States Barista Champion, hosted the event for all of us Mom Bloggers that attended. She has appeared on the Food Network and the Discovery Channel, and is even has a Guinness Book World Record for building the world's largest espresso machine. Perry is currently the Director of Training and Consulting at her family business, the Coffee Klatch.
Heather was kind enough to send us off with a pretty substantial listing of tasty recipes for you to try at home. They are easy to make, and don't require any professional equipment for you to purchase.
Classic Cappuccino
1 oz. of Espresso or strongly brewed coffee
4 oz. of Milk
Begin by brewing your shot of espresso using either an espresso machine or a strong brewing method. Heat your milk by steaping it using your espresso machine, or by slowly heating it up on the stove over medium heat, and then whipping it using an electric hand frother until the desired amount of froth is created. Put espresso in the bottom of the cup, and fill the cup with the heated milk.
Spiced Latte
1 Star Anise
3 Cloves
1/2 Cinnamon Stick
1/2 Vanilla Bean
8 oz. Milk
2 oz. Espresso or Strong Coffee
Begin by brewing your 2 oz of Espresso or Strong Coffee. Combine spices and milk and heat together wither by steaming or by slowly heating it up on the stove over medium heat, and then whipping it using an electric hand frother until the desired amount of froth is created. THis will not only heat the milk, but also gently infuse the flavors of the spices in to the milk. Place your espresso at the bottom of the cup and top with the spiced milk.
Classic Mocha
1 tablespoon of your favorite Chocolate Syrup or Powder
2 oz Espresso or Strong Coffee
10 oz Steamed Milk
Begin by brewing your espresso. Take a 12 oz cup and place your espresso at the bottom. Then add your favorite chocolate and mix well. Heat your milk by steaming using your espresso machine, or heat the milk separately and use a hand frother until the desired amount of front is created. Fill the cup with milk and top with whipped cream if desired.
Breve Blast
2 oz Espresso or Strong Coffee
1 oz Vanilla Syrup
4 oz Milk
Begin by brewing your espresso or coffee. Place the coffee in the bottom of a 16 oz cup and add your syrup. Top with 8 oz of cold milk. Gulp it down for a quick jump-start!
Creme Brulee Latte
2 oz Espresso or Strong Coffee
8 oz Steamed Milk
1 oz Vanilla Bean Syrup
2 tablespoons Caramel Topping
Begin by brewing your espresso or coffee. Take a 10 oz cup and lace the sides with 1 tablespoon of caramel topping. Then place the Vanilla Bean Syrup at the bottom of the cup, and top with the Espresso. Heat your milk by steaming using your espresso machine, or by slowly heating on the stove and then whipping using an electric hand frother. Fill the cup with the heated milk and top with remaining caramel.
All of these drinks cost a FRACTION of what Starbucks or any other Coffee House charges. The price range per drink is $0.37-$1.00, and at that price you can't afford not to make your own drinks at home! Besides, this means you don't have to schlep out of the house on a Sunday morning with smeared mascara, dumpy sweats, and a baseball cap to get your caffeine fix! And your bank account with thank you.
